Doll #2 Puss & Boots

I finally finished Doll #2.  I call them Puss and Boots, only because I haven't decided on a name for my doll. The idea came to me while watching Danita show us how to make the boots.  I always wanted to make the kitty, but never did because I didn't understand the language the pattern came from.  Pictures did the trick and it was not complex, so I managed.  A picture can paint a thousand words, or at least just enough to get the job done, in my case.

I should have named this doll the do-over doll, because I wound up doing over so many things. To name a few, I redid the dress at least three times. It was too long and I couldn't see the boots, which seemed pointless to call it Puss and Boots if you can't see the boots.  I did the boots twice because I didn't  zig-zag down enough and the laces didn't criss-cross.  I crochet her hair several times using different size crochet hooks.  Deciding where to place the corkscrew curls was another lamenting endeavor, should it be higher, lower, or in the middle?  What to use for ribbon and shawl?  I auditions many materials and lace with nothing working until I finally decided to crochet her a shawl and to make ribbons from the materials used in her dress.  I kept thinking about a new doll I wanted to make, and wished I didn't have to do things over so I could be done with her already!  She was patient waiting for me to finish her. I imagined her looking at me with her big blue eyes as I fretted about.  If she could speak she might say..."it's fine the way it is, don't do it over".  "It's just artistic expression there is no right or wrong".  But to me it just didn't "feel" right.  I had to keep chipping away at it, redoing and redoing.  Something better would emerge, I was sure of it.  That was the way of it with this doll.  She is not perfect by any means, but she represents what I had imagined her to be.  I keep hoping when I do something over, it is a way of letting my intuition know I am listening to that nagging feeling that something doesn't "feel" right.  I hope my intuition is listening to me when I ask it to help me to be the best artist I can be.

The End.

I really wanted to make the ducky and pink kitty too.

Another Doll WIP

I am having fun making my dolls.  The hair is the most challenging part for me.  The contrast between the flat painted hair and matching it with softer yarn or other hair-like substitute is hard.

My new doll is going to have blue, yellow and green combinations.  My daughter said this new doll looks like a mom.

I Joined The Doll Making Army

I am so glad I decided to take the online class with Danita Art (Idania).  Her instructions are generous and I got caught up in the passion of doll-making.

The picture above is how the dolls start out.  Mine is the one with all the fabric alongside two dolls.

I named my first doll Colleen.

I made numerous mistakes, which you can spot if you look at the pictures closely. But please don't do that, lol.  I really enjoy the process of making the dolls.  I feel a sense of relief when each step is completed and I haven't ruined the whole thing.  Maybe this happens the first time through, but will lessen with each consecutive doll.  I also love seeing all the other dolls made by the other students.  They are a wonderful bunch of gals!

My mind is already whirling with what the next doll is going to turn out like.

This is a funny picture below showing my weird sense of humor, with her sitting on top of a statue from Mexico of a fertility Goddess.

I seem to like red heads.

Practicing my faces

I tried to add a little color to my sketches.  I don't think I should have used my girls' colored pencils and used better quality.  I tried to color a warm glow in one of them, but it turned out more like some sort of injury.

Making Doll Art With Danita

I follow Danita on Facebook.  She is going to be teaching an online class on doll making.   I have always admired the luminescent eyes on her paintings and dolls.  Now she is going to show us how achieves this look..  I know my dolls won't look like hers exactly but I don't want that.  It took her years probably to achieve that look, but I think it would be fun to see what I come up with using her technique.

Anyways, the truth is she is giving away the class for free for one lucky person, but you have to advertise a bit for her.  I am willing to do that for a chance to win.

More Sketches

I have been feeling very lethargic and lazy lately.  Everyone but me was hit hard with the flu the past few weeks.  I have been feeling run down, but that could be from numerous things.  The picture below is how I felt inside.  The picture scares my little girl, Audrey.  I think it is kind of funny myself.

Speaker for the dead, the next book in the Ender series Sci-Fi

I have been doing minimal practice on sketching cute girls and here they are below.

Some flying poses.
